Specifically, you've recently gotten an alert that your storage was almost full, and have noticed that 90GB of storage is allocated to "System Storage", and you're not sure why or what to do. From your post, I understand that you have some concerns over the storage on your MacBook Pro. Thanks for stopping by the Apple Support Communities. I've never found it important to know how much space each type of file is taking up.

I've learned to ignore the drive storage information and just rely on the Finder telling me how much drive space I have left. But unfortunately the index is easily damaged and the report gives up a really bizarre result. Spotlight indexes your drive and is supposed to be able to report how much of your drive is being used for Documents, Movies, Photos, etc.

Once you restart normally you should see that most of the missing drive space has been restored and hopefully you won't get the full drive warning again.Īs for the system apparently taking up 90GB - well that's a well known bug. This safe mode restart will take longer than a normal startup because the disk drive is being checked and the before mentioned logs and caches are being dealt with. (Restart and hold the shift key until you see the Apple icon.) Once you are back to the desktop restart normal. The quick solution is to restart your computer in safe mode. These logs and temporary files are supposed to be trimmed and/or deleted regularly but on rare occasions this doesn't happen. The computer automatically collects information and puts it into log files and programs create temporary files. Since I'm a techie I had a pretty good idea what happened and I suspect the cause is the same for your computer. I remember the first time I got the full drive warning and I absolutely knew it wasn't possible. ANYONE, PLEASE, do y'all have anyway I can lower my system storage? Apple is literally ******* me off. I'm a college student, I don't have the money to go buy a new hard drive or replace the storage on my laptop. Okay, but why is it this much, when last month I didn't even know what system storage was? Honestly, I would've NEVER bought the laptop if I knew this would happen. When I went to go check if my storage went down, I noticed that my SYSTEM STORAGE IS 90GB OF MY STORAGE! That is insane, how is that possible? HOW? So I call Apple Tech Support and the person tells me that you can't delete the system storage because that is what runs the computer. I freaked out and deleted almost everything on my laptop, from apps to assignments to music. Yesterday, I get a notification saying my storage is almost full. I never had much space being taken up anyway, and the last time I was a month ago and it was BELOW the halfway mark on the bar. I alway check my storage regularly, I don't know why, but I like knowing.

I bought my new MacBook Pro in August 2017, I knew 120GB would manage my small assignments I do for school so I purchased it. Honestly, I've never been so frustrated with Apple in my life.
